THE LOCATION ISN'T JUST WHERE THE PORTRAIT HAPPENS

PORTRAITS WITH A SENSE OF PLACE

An environmental portrait is simply a portrait created outside the studio, using the surroundings to add context and personality to the image. That might mean photographing someone in a beautifully designed office, a garden or park, aboard a boat, inside a hotel, or anywhere else that helps tell more of their story.

The setting can be subtle or become an important part of the image. A single light is often enough to create a natural, approachable portrait, but we can also build a more polished lighting setup when the assignment calls for it. I've used this approach for organizations including the Richmond Symphony and local law firms, creating portraits that feel connected to the people and places they represent.

DESIGNED AROUND THE LOCATION

The best location is usually one that tells us something about the person or organization. A business may want its architecture or workspace visible in the background. A hotel executive might be photographed throughout the property. A boating crew might be photographed aboard their vessel. The environment gives the portrait context that a traditional studio background simply can't provide.

Planning is especially important for outdoor sessions. Weather, available light, time of day, and changing conditions can all affect the final images. Outdoor portraits photographed on different days may naturally have variations in light and appearance, while indoor locations generally allow for much greater consistency. We'll discuss those considerations during planning and choose an approach that makes sense for the assignment.

INVESTMENT

Group environmental portraits start at $250.

These sessions are designed primarily for teams and groups who need professional portraits on location, with the environment providing context and a more personal alternative to a traditional studio headshot.

Individual environmental portrait sessions start at $325 per hour.

A shorter session can be focused on creating a few polished portraits, while additional time allows us to build something much more comprehensive. We can incorporate multiple outfits, locations, backgrounds, props, and a variety of poses to create a full environmental branding session rather than simply a headshot.

Because these sessions take place on location, the final investment can vary based on travel, location requirements, number of people, time needed, and the level of lighting or production involved. We'll discuss those details during the planning process and build the session around what you need.
