Behind the Assignment

Every commercial project comes with its own goals, challenges, and opportunities. These featured case studies offer a closer look at the planning, collaboration, and creative problem-solving behind some of my favorite assignments—and how thoughtful photography helps businesses tell their story.

Photographing Innovation in a Secure Manufacturing Environment

Client

Virginia Diodes

Industry

Manufacturing

Some assignments require more than technical photography skills—they require planning, adaptability, and a deep respect for the client's environment. Commissioned by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership for a feature highlighting Virginia's advanced manufacturing sector, this project took me inside Virginia Diodes, a company that develops precision components for satellite and aerospace applications.

Working inside a secure clean room presented unique challenges. Before entering the laboratory, both my equipment and I underwent contamination-control procedures, and every aspect of the production had to be carefully planned to protect sensitive processes and proprietary technology. Throughout the assignment, I worked closely with the client and facility staff to ensure the imagery showcased the company's innovation while safeguarding confidential information and maintaining normal operations.

The images reflect the laboratory exactly as it existed. The distinctive yellow lighting is an essential part of the manufacturing process, designed to protect the integrity of the work being performed. Rather than altering the environment, the objective was to accurately document both the people and the precision behind this highly specialized operation while remaining true to the facility itself.

The finished photographs provided the Virginia Economic Development Partnership with compelling editorial imagery highlighting one of the Commonwealth's innovative manufacturers while respecting the security, technical requirements, and operational integrity of the facility.

Creating a First Impression That Reflects Exceptional Care

Client

HCA Healthcare

Industry

Healthcare

For healthcare organizations, photography often shapes a patient's first impression long before they walk through the front door. HCA Healthcare needed an exterior image of Chippenham Hospital that reflected the professionalism, warmth, and quality of care patients experience every day—not simply a photograph of the building.

Working closely with the Director of Communications and Community Engagement, we planned the production around blue hour, when the softer evening light would complement the architecture and create a welcoming atmosphere. Weather conditions were monitored in advance to identify an evening with the right balance of clouds and light, adding depth and color to the sky while preserving the natural character of the campus.

Capturing the image required careful coordination on site. Because the hospital's main entrance remained active throughout the session, we worked alongside the security team to briefly clear the traffic circle, creating a clean, unobstructed composition without disrupting normal operations.

The final photograph is a carefully blended composite created from multiple exposures captured over more than an hour—from sunset through blue hour and into the evening as the building lights illuminated the campus. Every decision, from timing to composition and post-production, was made with a single goal in mind: creating an image that feels welcoming, professional, and authentic.

Today, the photograph serves as a signature marketing asset, providing HCA Healthcare with a polished hero image for digital, print, and promotional materials while reinforcing the organization's commitment to excellence before patients ever step through the doors.

Preserving History, One Vehicle at a Time

Client

Luray Caverns

Industry

Museum

Antique steam-powered vehicle with large wooden spoke wheels and copper boiler on gray background.

For museums and cultural attractions, photography plays an important role in preserving history while inspiring future visitors. Luray Caverns commissioned a comprehensive library of marketing imagery for its Antique Car & Carriage Museum, with the goal of presenting each historic vehicle as if it were displayed individually rather than as part of a densely arranged collection.

The challenge was significant. The museum offered very little space for lighting equipment or camera movement, requiring every vehicle to be carefully repositioned after hours before being returned to its original location. Working alongside my assistant, museum staff, and members of the Luray Caverns family, each evening was carefully planned and coordinated to move, stage, and photograph dozens of historic vehicles efficiently while protecting an irreplaceable collection and maximizing the limited production time available.

Creating the finished photographs extended well beyond the time spent behind the camera. Every image underwent meticulous post-production to remove visual distractions, eliminate reflections from neighboring vehicles, isolate each subject, and create a consistent look across the entire collection. The result is a cohesive library of imagery that highlights the craftsmanship and character of each vehicle while providing Luray Caverns with versatile marketing assets for print, digital, editorial, and promotional use.

The success of this project led to an ongoing partnership with Luray Caverns, including the documentation of another museum collection and future photography of the caverns themselves following the completion of a major lighting renovation.

Creating Lifestyle Imagery on the Water

Client

Sail Surf Adventures

Industry

Adventure

Couple relaxing on sailboat deck on sunny day with bridge visible in background.

For lifestyle brands, authenticity is everything. Sail Surf Adventures needed a collection of imagery that captured more than a beautifully restored sailing vessel.

it needed photographs that conveyed the experience of chasing waves, exploring the Chesapeake Bay, and sharing unforgettable moments on the water. The goal was to create a versatile library of marketing assets that reflected the spirit of the brand while inspiring future guests.

Bringing that vision to life required extensive planning long before the first photograph was made. Weather, wind, tides, wave conditions, and lighting all had to align, while experienced surfers were carefully selected to ensure every moment felt genuine. The production began before sunrise in Cape Charles, Virginia, where photography took place aboard the sailboat and from a Zodiac positioned nearby to capture the vessel, the surfers, and the surrounding landscape from multiple perspectives.

Photographing on open water introduced challenges that simply don't exist on land. Working from two constantly moving boats required continuous coordination, adaptability, and precise timing as conditions changed throughout the day. Every image balanced technical precision with the authentic, unscripted energy that defines a memorable outdoor adventure.

The finished collection provided Sail Surf Adventures with a cohesive library of lifestyle imagery supporting their website, social media, advertising, and promotional materials while authentically communicating the experience that sets their brand apart.

Supporting a Historic Brand Refresh

Client

Richmond Flying Squirrels

Industry

Sports

A successful rebrand is more than a new logo—it's the introduction of a new visual identity. As the Richmond Flying Squirrels prepared to unveil their refreshed branding ahead of their inaugural season at CarMax Park, I was commissioned to create a comprehensive library of imagery supporting the launch across digital, print, social media, merchandise, and public relations. The refreshed brand and uniforms were officially unveiled as part of the team's 2026 season announcement.

Bringing the campaign to life required extensive planning and close collaboration with the Flying Squirrels organization. Produced over multiple days in my studio, the assignment involved coordinating players, mascots, uniforms, hats, bats, baseballs, apparel, and branded merchandise to create a wide variety of marketing assets. Every image was intentionally crafted to support a specific purpose—from teaser campaigns and media releases to merchandise promotions and large-format print.

Because the imagery would become the foundation of the organization's brand launch, consistency was essential. Multiple members of the Flying Squirrels staff worked alongside the production team throughout the shoot, while the organization's video department documented the process behind the scenes. Every lighting setup, composition, and product arrangement was carefully planned to ensure a cohesive visual identity across every platform.

The finished collection provided the Richmond Flying Squirrels with a versatile library of launch imagery supporting the introduction of their refreshed brand, new uniforms, merchandise, and inaugural season at CarMax Park. The photographs appeared throughout the team's marketing campaign, media announcements, and promotional materials, helping introduce the next chapter of Flying Squirrels baseball to fans across the region.

The imagery created during this production became part of the Richmond Flying Squirrels' public brand launch ahead of their inaugural season at CarMax Park. You can view the official announcement and branding reveal on the team's website.
